Using Your Position to Bluff

Using Your Position to Bluff There are two ways in which players can win while playing poker. One way is to have the best hand at the table. The other way is to bluff and force the other players to think you have the best hand at the table. Throughout the game, players must decide for themselves if they want to bluff or not. However, it is important to note that in some instances players can use their position in order to aid them in bluffing. From a personal perspective, when playing live poker games I am only going to bluff if I believe that I will also be able to pick up one of the others tells. Tells can come in many forms. Some players may quickly check their cards, others may sigh. Sometimes a look of disgust may cross their face when an ace hits the flop. Determining tells is not as easy to accomplish when playing online poker games. Obviously, you can't see the face of an opponent when they are sitting a half a world away. While I am skeptical of these manuals, there are books available designed to help players understand and interpret internet tells. Since I have not ready any of these books, I will limit my discussion to using one's position to bluff in live games against real and physically identifiable opponents.

Consider the situation that the player has progressed and the table at which they are playing is the $2/$4 Limit Hold'em. All of the opponents at the table pass to you on the blind. Since there are only two hands behind you, you have made the decision to raise your pair of eights. After you make this decision, the small blind at the table reraises. In turn, you call. Then the flop comes. There is an ace, a king and a two. These cards are off suit. In response to this, the small blind checks. The options against the small blind are that they are a sneaky player that they raised you with a pair of nine, ten, jack or queen, that they have a smaller pair than your pair of eights or he is raising because he holds suited connectors. Regardless of where this players is actually at, he has assumed that you have called him with an ace. It is then advised that you make a bet. After all, you may be able to win a substantial pot with a small bluff. However, if the other player raises it is advised that you fold. Overall, it is important for you as an individual to try to make a judgment as to how sneaky or how honest the other player is.

All in all, it is possible for a player to use their position to bluff. Still, there is a warning for poker players. Many players bluff and get carried away. They bluff too often and as a result lose money in the long run. It is important not to get carried away when bluffing. When it comes to poker the most important virtue for players is likely virtue. However, it can be very difficult to develop and hold onto this.

On a personal note, it is important to note that recently I was able to take part in the European Omaha Championship. This championship was held in Paris. While the deck hit me in the face for two days I was able to outlast some of the best Omaha players in the world. These players included Rob Hollink who hails from Holland and Robert Williamson from the United States of America. In the end I won seventy one thousand Euros. The next week, I took part in a Hold'em event and received a prize of forty one thousand Euros. Good luck, have fun and remember how to use your position to bluff.
