Philippines crack down on illegal gambling
Illegal gambling with numbers, known as jueteng, flourishing in Philippines has become a subject of stubborn discussion in governing circles. The move to eliminate illegal forms of gambling has been recently supported by the League of Municipalities, that joined a resolved anti-gambling program initiated by the President.
According to Mabalacat Mayor Marino Morales, the League has adopted the resolution of the Pampanga Mayors League approving President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her move to stop all forms of illegal gambling, particularly jueteng.
In a recent press conference the mayors vowed solidarity to the administration and the Constitution. This will facilitate implementing the President's directive imposing heavier penalties on those who violated pertinent anti-gambling laws. The President's policy against all forms of illegal gambling is backed by many institutions like the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines and other religious organizations.
In line with current policy, the officials urged the Philippine National Police and concerned agencies to implement stricter laws against illegal gambling. The Police has already reported an some results, so Luzon Island and some other areas are now jueteng-free.

If there is truly a strong political will to combat corruption and illegal gambling, political leaders should institutionalize the participation of all stakeholders, the Church, youth, farmers, fisher folks and others in an effort to rid our society of this malady."
