Hunter S. Thompson’s suicide boosts `Gonzo` books sales

As ‘Gonzo’ writer Hunter S. Thompson takes own life, sales of his favorite books would jumped up remarkably.

Legendary author Hunter S. Thompson killed himself with a handgun in his home in Colorado one and a half week ago. Thompson was 67.

Las Vegas and gambling were remarkable parts of Thompon’s extravagant literary legacy.Hunter Thompson was a journalist symbol of the U.S. counterculture since the 1960s and the father of "gonzo journalism," an unusual and highly personalized writing style, in which the writer is an essential component of the story.

Thompson’s final decision may has been driven by the fact that the author of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” was in pain from broken leg and a hip-replacement and decided to reserve the final word to himself. "Though we will miss him bitterly, we understand his decision. Let the world know that Dr. Hunter S. Thompson died with his glass full, a fearless man, a warrior," Thompson's widow and his son said. His decision seems to be completely corresponding with Thompson’s very subjective and furious writing style which can be indicated with what he wrote about Nixon after his death in 1994 in the Rolling Stone magazine:  “His casket [should] have been launched into one of those open-sewage canals that empty into the ocean just south of Los Angeles... He was queer in the deepest way. His body should have been burned in a trash bin." Being critic militant of American Dream, Hunter Thompson was (a twist of fate!) its embodiment. After screening his life in “Where The Buffalo Roam” (1980) starring Bill Murray and Peter Boyle, film adaptation of his “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” in 1998 starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro made Thompson a living legend. It was easy to predict that the sales of his most favorite works would jump up since his suicide. Published in 1972, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” zoomed from No. 1,412 to No. 12 in the list on Tuesday, online bookseller Amazon.com reported.  Besides, Gonzo’s life is to be filmed again. This time Johnny Depp is to play Hunter Thompson in the screen version of one of Gonzo’s earliest novels, The Rum Diary. Being currently in production, film was supposed to be directed by Del Toro, but he withdrew at the end of 2004 and his successor is not announced yet.
