Last Gonzo work: Hunter Thompson 'shot himself on phone'

The last Gonzo work by Thompson: suicide... Now we can learn how exactly it happened.  Legendary Gonzo author Hunter S. Thompson, 67, killed himself with a handgun in his home in Colorado last Sunday. 

Thompson’s widow, 32-year-old Anita Thompson has said Hunter killed himself while they were speaking to one another over the phone. Anita Thompson told she heard the "clicking of the gun". The widow said: "I was on the phone with him, he set the receiver down and did it."

Anita Thompson said Hunter had asked her to come home from a health club so they could work on his weekly column, but instead her husband shot himself even without saying goodbye. Mrs. Thompson also said she heard a loud, muffled noise, but did not know what had happened. "I was waiting for him to get back on the phone," she said…

Thompson was later found dead by his son, Juan. Hunter Thompson shot himself in the head in the kitchen while his son, daughter-in-law and six-year-old grandson were in the house.

"He wanted to leave on top of his game. I wish I could have been more supportive of his decision," Anita Thompson noted.

Hunter Thompson was a journalist symbol of the U.S. counterculture since the 1960s and the father of so-called Gonzo journalism, an unusual and highly personalized writing style, in which the writer is an essential component of the story.

It was though that Thompson’s final decision may has been driven by the fact that the author of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” was in pain from broken leg and a hip-replacement and decided to reserve the final word to himself.

Mrs Thompson told the newspaper her husband had repeatedly talked about killing himself in the months running up to his death. Hunter Thompson had also left verbal and written instructions about what he wanted done with his body, his unpublished works and his assets.
