Mel Gibson’s stalker convicted by jury
Zack Sinclair, a 34-year-old Idaho drifter accused on stalking actor-director Mel Gibson, 49, is awaiting a verdict as jurors in his case reached a verdict Friday following brief deliberations. Sinclair, Gibsons "Passion of the Christ" fan, who claimed he was on a mission from God to pray with Mel Gibson, was convicted of felony stalking Friday.Sinclair faces up to 16 months in prison.Mel Gibson testified he was attending church services in September 2004 when Sinclair got up briefly and returned to find Sinclair sitting in his seat. Gibson said that Sinclair moved very close to his face, telling him, "Hi, I'm here to pray with you.""I found it odd someone would not have a sense of personal boundary, and whether or not they were welcome," said Gibson. "My wife was upset and worried. She didn't want to find him in the living room drinking tea," Gibson testified, adding that he signed papers approving a restraining order against Sinclair to "decrease stress on my wife and therefore me because these things can run downhill."But Gibson noted Sinclair "wasn't scary or overtly threatening."
Sinclair was arrested in September 2004 for investigation of stalking Gibson, when he went repeatedly to the gate of Gibson's real estate in Malibu and asked Gibson to pray with him. While in custody, Sinclair was served with a restraining order that prohibited him from coming near the actor-director or his family for three years and was released the same day. Sinclair was re-arrested the next day for allegedly violating the court order by returning to Gibson's estate.
It seems that Mel Gibson has no place to hide from his stalker after he has just sold his 45,000-acre Beartooth real estate near Columbus to his neighbours Kent and Pam Williams. The Williams said they signed the handshake deal last week and the agreement prevents either party from divulging the purchase price. "Pam and I were worried that if it got in the wrong hands, the valley would be subdivided and split up," Kent Williams said.
Mel Gibson and director bought the ranch in 1988, and the Williams owned the adjoining 2,000-acre ranch.Ranch manager John Carrel said Gibson declined to comment.Gibson "Passion of the Christ" earned $370.3 at the domestic box office in 2004, making it the third-highest grossing film of the year.
