London's bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games came true when the city's "awesome" bid team joined in Singapore by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair pulled off a spectacular victory.
London beat long-running bookmakers favourites Paris in the closest of finishes, winning the fourth and final vote of International Olympic Committee delegates in Singapore by just four votes, 54 to 50.

Speaking in Singapore, Mrs Jowell told reporters an Olympic Bill would be introduced in Parliament in the next few days.

Sports Minister Richard Caborn said: "We actually gave the Olympic movement the modernisation. It is about bringing young children through sport and the Olympic movement... I think they have accepted that message and that challenge."
