UK National Lottery celebrates 10 years
The UK National Lottery celebrated its 10th birthday on 6th of November. The game has created more than 1,700 millionaires and raised over £16 billion for worthy causes, enhancing the lives of millions of people across the UK, according to www.artdaily.com.
Five Millennium Commission funded projects have been nominated in two categories. The Lowry in Salford and the Millennium Coastal Park in Wales have both been nominated for the Amazing Space Award. The UK-wide National Cycle Network, Tate Modern in London and The Eden Project in Cornwall have been nominated for the U.K. Life Award.
Mike OConnor CBE, Director of the Millennium Commission said, "Ten years of the National Lottery has enabled the Millennium Commission to invest £2.2 billion in a hugely diverse range of good causes from world class visitor attractions; local community projects; festivals during 2000; schemes to enable disadvantaged children to go to the theatre; cultural programmes in 19 urban areas and funding for a new generation of science centres.
Around 150 lottery-funded projects across the UK will either be opening for free or staging special events, according to Sky News.
The events included a large outdoor party at Tate Modern in London, and a special Lotto draw with a guaranteed £10 million jackpot.
It is only the second time players have been able to enter a Lotto draw for nothing in this way.
Finalists in the category of National Hero include track champion Kelly Holmes, who won gold in both the 800m and the 1500m events at the Olympic Games.
