Ireland: off course betting up 22 percent in 2003
According to the latest figures of Horse Racing Ireland (HRI), off course betting reached Euro1billion last year, an increase of over 22 percent on the previous year. Turnover of the state-backed tote betting system was up 12 percent, while sponsorship money grew by 9 percent to Euro3.4mln.
The report published by Businessworld.ie noted that on-course wagering operators also experienced business growth and bookmaker turnover at the country's racecourses reached Euro84.7million - up Euro4.3million, or 5percent.
Horse Racing Ireland chief executive Brian Kavanagh commented, The results are extremely encouraging. The figures show that 2004 is likely to be another successful year for Irish racing."
Attendance figures go upwards as well, but they were hindered by wet weather in June and some other major events like GAA matches and the Euro 2004 soccer championship. Up to the end of May attendance figures were 11percent ahead of last year, and they finished the six months to the end of June 4.2 percent ahead of last year.
"The extra fixtures included in 2004 have resulted in more choice for the racegoer and more opportunities for owners and horses to compete," Kavanagh added.
