The 2009 World Championships of Poker is now over and the winner of the main event took home the top prize of $1,715,200 last Sunday. This player went by the user name of Jovial Gent and his name is Yevgeniy Timoshenko.

The 2009 event was sponsored by the online poker room Poker Stars and there were 2,144 players that paid the buy in fee of $5,200 to be in with a chance of taking home a portion of the $10.72 million prize pool. This is a really popular event and the WCOOP is a much anticipated competition by members of the online poker community. If you haven’t been following the action here is a rundown of the final game and the last nine players.

This last event consisted of two days of intense play and the final table has Timoshenko in second place behind Daniel Kelly. The first person to drop out of the event in ninth place was PeachyMer and this player took home a whopping $96,480. In eight place was Supa4real and this player won $182,240. In seventh place was Mudvaynes who got $268,000. In sixth place it was Chong94 who took home $375,200. Fifth place was Xaston who won $482,400.

In fourth place was Kelly who took home $643,200 and he also won the coveted Player of The Series award and this will see him being flown to the Bahamas to take part in the main event of the 2010 Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure.

The final three players continued to battle it out and third place Reddevil took home $933,712. After a very tense final it was Udon Wannit who finally took home the second place prize of $1,286,400 leaving Timoshenko the winner. Timoshenko also won a trip to the Bahamas for the 2010 Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure.

It was a really exciting final game and the prizes won were life changing. The event will happen again next year so you have plenty of time to practice your online poker skills if you would like to be in with a chance of entering next year.

Poker Stars is the venue for the 2009 World Championships of Online Poker and it is happening as I type. On Friday it was a British player that scooped the jackpot. The British player Mustafabet claimed the pot-limit Omaha six-max event on Friday taking home a whopping $86,247 in cold hard cash.

It took Mustafabet over 14 hours of enduring play to collect the top prize and he was playing in a field of 2,738 players. Among these players were Bertrand Grospellier and Barry Greenstein.

This year, the WCOOP is giving out over $40 million in guaranteed prizes. This cash is being spread over 45 different events that are being held throughout September. The next big game in this event is the no-limit hold’em triple shootout ten-max and the guaranteed jackpot for this one is a whopping $500,000. The event after this is the eight game and this one has a guaranteed jackpot of $300,000.

The WCOOP is the most popular of all the hundreds of poker tournaments that take place each year and most of the professional poker players say that these championships are must play events. Last year there were over 20,000 players that took part and these players came from all over the world to compete in a bid to become the world champion in the WCOOP.

The WCOOP first began in 2002 and it has continued to be the riches online tournament series ever. The biggest addition to the event this year is the big ante no-limit hold’em event that has a whopping $500,000 up for grabs. This event will take place on the 16th September. Another event that is going to be extremely popular is the $530 buy-in heads-up-pot-limit OMAHA content that will take place on the 19th of September. The OMAHA event has a guaranteed jackpot of $250,000.
