In today’s post I want to discuss some Texas holdem terms that all players should be familiar with. By now you know about placing bets and the basic rules for playing this game but without knowledge of the terms that are used this might all be useless when it comes to playing online poker.
Online Poker Terms
Buy-in: This term relates to the minimum chip value that is required to play at the table. It is quite normal for the minimum chip value to be at least 10 times higher than the highest stake for that game. This ensures that players have enough chips to last the game.
Blind: This term refers to the bets which are the small blind and the big blind. These are what are used to put money into play. The blinds are mandatory bets and they rotate around the table.
Small Blind: This is the bet amount that the player to the left of the dealer must make.
Big Blind: If you are playing online poker that requires money being put into play the big blind is generally equal to the lower amount of the stakes required for the game. When playing the big blind follows the small blind and is put up by the player immediately left of the dealer.
Pot: This is the total amount of chips that are available to win in any given hand.
Freeroll: This online poker term applies to online poker tournaments where the entry fee, the stakes, or both are waived.
These are the main terms that you will need to know and understand if you want to play online Texas holdem poker.
In tomorrow’s post we will move on to discuss online poker tables and the single table tournament and the multi table tournament.

In this post I want to take about playing the hand when it comes to online poker. With Texas holdem poker play begins with each player being dealt two cards face down. These cards are called hole cards or pocket cards. These two cards are the only cards that each player will receive individually and is it quite common that these cards only be revealed at the showdown. This is what makes Texas holdem a closed poker game.
The hand begins with what is called a “pre-flop” betting round and this starts with the player to the left of the big blind or the player to the left of the dealer. It then continues clockwise and the betting will continue until every player has either folded, put in all of their chips, or matched the amount put in by all the other active players.
After this round and assuming that at least two players remain the dealer will then deal a flop which is three face up cards. This is then followed by a second betting round and this round starts with the player to the dealers left and continues clockwise. After this round ends a single card often called the turn or fourth street card is dealt and then the third betting round begins. A final single card called the river or fifth street will then be dealt followed by a fourth round of betting and then the showdown if needed.
The Texas Holdem Showdown
If you are playing texas holdem and you bet and all of the other players fold you will win the pot and you won’t have to show your hole cards. If two or more players remain after the final betting round then you will have what is called a showdown. In the showdown you will be required to play the best five card hand that you can make from the seven cards which are the five cards on the table and your two hole cards.
You can use both of your hold cards, one of them, or none at all, to make up your final five card hand. If the five cards on the table make up your best hand then this is known as playing the board and you can’t win the pot but you can hope to split it if the other person is in the same boat.
If more than one person has the best hand then the pot is split equally. In holdem the cards numerical rank is the most important as the suit values are irrelevant in this game.
So there you have it how to play your cards and what a holdem showdown is. Tomorrow we will move on and discuss some Texas holdem terms that every player should be familiar with.
Until next time,

When it comes to online gambling, the most popular of all the games has to be online poker. This series of articles focuses on the online poker game called Texas holdem and assumes that you are familiar with the general game and rules of poker and poker hands.
The objective of Texas holdem is to win pots. A pot is the sum of money that has been bet by the players who are playing in this hand. You can win the pot in two ways: one is by what is called a showdown and this is where you form the best five card poker hand out of the seven cards available or you bet against the other players and cause them to fold.
When it comes to betting in Texas holdem online poker a standard game with blind bets is normally what is played and this game will use big and small blind bets. Antes can also be used in addition to the blinds and this is particularly common in the later stages of the tournament play. A dealer button is used to represent the player who is in the dealer position and the button will rotate clockwise after each hand and this in turn changes the position of the dealer and the blinds.
The small blind will be placed by the player to the left of the dealer and this amount is usually equal to half of the big blind. The big blind which is posted by the player to the left of the small blind is usually equal to the minimum bet allowed in the online poker game. If you are playing tournament poker the blind/ante structure will increase as the tournament progresses.
When there are only two players remaining in the tournament special head to head rules are then enforced and the blinds are different. The dealer will post the small blind and the other player will place the big blind.
There are three common variations of holdem and these are limit holdem, no-limit holdem, and pot limit holdem. Limit holdem has always been the most popular and in this variation bets and raises during the first two rounds must be equal to the big blind. In the next two rounds bets and raises must be equal to twice the big blind.
That’s it for this first post and hopefully you now know about placing bets in holdem poker. Tomorrows post will talk about playing your hand in holdem poker.
Until then,
