The online betting giant Betfair has just released a statement saying that it will no longer be accepting bets from people in France after the French nation passed legislation outlawing operators not domestically licensed from accepting wagers.  Betfair did however state that they were still considering whether or not to actually apply for a French license under the new regime.  They also voiced their concerns over the as yet unpublished requirements and the lack of clarity about how the market will actually work.

Betfair are critical of the new legislation and even though they are welcoming the move from a monopoly model to a licensed system they are concerned about the restrictions that could be imposed on licensed operators.

They went on to say that they are looking very hard at the French market at the moment and how they might be able to operate within the new licensed regime.  Tim Phillips who is the European Public Affairs Director for Betfair also stated that although it is not impossible for a newcomer to create a commercially viable business most projections do show that it will be very difficult with the proposed restrictions that are being imposed on license holders.  He went on to say that French legislation will certainly benefit the incumbent players and the ultimate loser will be the French consumer.

The new laws do not open the former monopoly’s market to true competition from other casino operators.  He also went on to say that Betfair will be reviewing the things in 18 months time to see how the land lies but in the meantime they will be holding off on accepting bets from people in France.

I will keep you updated on this story if there are any more developments.

The British online betting exchange operator Betfair Limited has just launched their very first wagering application for televisions. This new application will be running the new Yahoo! TV Widget Engine and it has been designed to give gambling enthusiasts a new interactive gaming experience. Interactive television is the latest innovative design and it is great to see Betfair exploring this new portal.

Betfair have come out and said that they actually created a specialist team to lead the innovation in this area after they saw the growing importance of the interactive television platform. They also carried out a lot of research and they have predicted that there would be 15 million connected TV sets in Europe by the end of 2010. This is great news for European sports enthusiasts and I’m sure there will be a huge demand for this service once it becomes available.

According to Simon Million, Chief Executive Office for Betfair TV Limited, televisions are the centre of home entertainment and live sport on television is what drives Betfair’s business. The way people are now interacting with their televisions is changing and Betfair’s investment in this exciting new platform ensure that Betfair will be an integral part of the future of internet connected television.

Yahoo! is the trusted partner for publishers who want to take advantage of Yahoo’s global distribution channels. Betfair will continue working on advancements and building a worldwide developer ecosystem for publishing and distributing new and innovative TV widgets.

In countries that will allow it, Betfair’s TV widget will provide sports enthusiasts with an online entertainment experience that will enhance their sports television viewing. This is fantastic new for sports fans and I’m sure this is going to be a huge success. If this sounds like something that you would be interested you can read all the latest developments and news on the Betfair website.
