It is almost the 'easiest' game other than tic-tac-toe. However, easy to start doesn't mean easy to play well. That follows a good saying, 'one minute to learn, but a life to master'!
1.1
Figure 1.1 is the starting position of every game. A player picks black and the other picks white. Black always plays first. When it is your turn to play, you can place a disc of your color onto one of the empty squares on the board, provided that your move MUST be able to flip at least one of your opponent's discs. At the same time, you must flip ALL your opponent's discs between the disc you just put and the remaining one on the board. And that flipping goes in eight directions, horizontally, vertically and diagonally.
1.2
Take figure 1.2 as an example. Black plays F5, the white disc at E5 is now sitting between D5 and F5, therefore, the E5 white disc is flipped to black. This leads to figure 1.3. As you see, that explains why 'Reversi' is being named.
1.3
One thing to remember is that there are no chain reactions. That means the discs flipped to your color by your move will not immediately flip any other discs of your opponent.
1.4
In figure 1.4, if black plays C6, 6 white discs are flipped. However, since there is no chain reaction, no more white disc will be flipped, even though the white disc at D5 is between two black discs C5 and E5 now (Figure 1.5).
1.5
If there are no legal moves, the player must pass. The opponent can play continuously until you have a legal move. Black and White take turns to play, the game ends if:
All squares are occupied.
Both players cannot play all the remaining empty squares.
The one who possesses more discs wins the game. If the result is a 32:32, it is generally regarded as a draw, though there are handicapped games favoring black in some computer and human tournaments.
If the game ends by b), for convenience of scoring (e.g. in the World Othello Championship rules), all the empty squares will be granted to the winners as real discs.
