Tiger Woods eyes return to No.1 at Nissan Open in Los Angeles
Will Tiger Woods reclaim No.1 spot at Nissan Open?
This week's Nissan Open in Los Angeles is Tiger Woods chance to regain his status of the world No.1 in professional golf rankings, which he lost to Fijian Vijay Singh last September.
Woods hasnt won the Nissan Open at Riviera Country Club in 9 attempts, but he has produced four top-10 finishes there, including a runner-up spot in 1998 and a tie for second in 1999.
Worlds No. 2 American Tiger Woods needs to finish in the top 4 if he is to reclaim No.1 spot, says Official World Golf Rankings Ian Barker: "Tiger needs to pick up 19 world ranking points at the Nissan Open to overtake the Fijian. Based upon the current declared field for the PGA Tour event, this means he has to finish no worse than outright fourth or in a three-way tie for third."
A good new for Tiger Woods is that Phil Mickelson, winner of the last two PGA Tour events, has taken the week off. So too have Singh, who stripped Woods of his status of the worlds leading player, and world No.3 Ernie Els.
Woods has a home advantage at Riviera Country Club. "I played in my first pro event there when I was 16 and have great memories of the course," Woods said in an interview. "I love old, traditional layouts that require shot-making, smart play and good touch and you need all three to win at Riviera.
Woods is confident about his victory at Riviera after a holiday: "I would love to win at Riviera Country Club, where I've come close a couple times. I have enjoyed my three weeks off ... and I honestly expect to play well."
Tiger Woods, who topped the world golf rankings for a record 264 consecutive weeks before losing the No1. spot to Vijay Singh, will also be bidding this week to extend his record run of 135 consecutive PGA Tour events without missing the cut.
