Kanye West, who survived a serious car crash to led the list of the biggest hits of the year with his debut album, made a stunning surprise winning the top position in 10 nominations. Kanye West was followed very closely by Usher and Alicia Keys.
"Ten nominations, that's amazing,'' said West, a nominations presenter at the Music Box Theatre in Hollywood. "That's like a perfect score. I'm at a loss for words.''
"I'm on cloud eight right now. You know, I didn't really expect this. In life," said Alpharetta, Ga. resident Usher, who was in Los Angeles wrapping up a short film set to be aired on New Year's Eve.
Ray Charles came up just behind Usher and Keys, whose final album, Genius Loves Company was cited in seven categories. East Bay punk rock heroes Green Day earned six for the band's rock opera, American Idiot. Prince, Norah Jones, Loretta Lynn and recording engineer Al Schmitt each have five bids.
The 47th annual Grammy Awards will be handed out in 107 categories on Feb. 13 at Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on CBS-TV.
"This year's nominees truly reflect a trend of musicmakers participating in multiple aspects of the creative process, while also often collaborating with a diverse slate of other artists in various genres," said Neil Portnow, president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which presents the awards show.
